Greetings

Hello All,

Thanks for taking a look at my blog. My name is Tom Truscello. I am a middle school mathematics teacher at Highland Middle School. This blog was created for my New Media and New Literacy graduate course.

In my teaching, I utilized the flipped classroom model along with elements of blended learning so I look forward to continuing my own learning in the area of technology.

More posts to come soon!

Tom

  1. Collaboration and creation (Bloom's top tier) is certainly a challenge in the classroom . In our ELA writing classroom, creation happens everyday-but the collaborative, not so much.
The new literacy has opened doors but it has also created a chasm between the haves and have nots. Wouldn't it be interesting to arm everyone with this technology? What would that look like?
What excites me, personally, is how this media has become an instrument for social and economic change. I think it is essential that we educate our children about this, as well. In developing countries, media has become much more than just a teaching tool. It is a sign that there is electricity and hardware available to peoples who lived forever without those things. The global initiative to arm the third world with technology holds so many possibilities. And here's the kicker, in spite of how little our own children seem to be reading online, in developing nations, according to Annie Kelly (2013) access to media has created a virtual "renaissance of reading and writing for people all around the world."
As we move forward in our studies, I will be on the lookout for examples of how new literacy can tell us about ourselves and others. This can lead to a grander definition of collaboration.
